Starting the Double Play

Hello, and thanks for stopping by my new sports blog, The Double Play! I'm planning to update this blog at least once per week. The posts will probably be longer and thus less frequent as I view this as more of a column than a blog.

The inspiration for the name of this blog comes from my initials, DP, which I have also always used as part of my online identification. More than just a name, it will serve as the basic structure for my posts. They will come in two parts: one part will focus on one of the local teams that I follow closely, depending on the season (New York Mets, New York Giants, New Jersey Devils); and the other will be on another spots topic (this could range from a focus on a rival team, to discussing playoffs or a big news story, to weekly NFL picks - basically anything I feel like discussing). In this way, I can write passionately about the teams that matter most to me and that I can go more in depth with, while at the same time keeping my blog open to a wider audience and not confining it to just those who follow the same team.

This is my second attempt at a sports blog. My first, Long Live Shea!, focused on the Mets, sputtered a couple times and is not currently being updated, but it is still available as an archive of my previous writings. Hopefully this blog might inspire me to continue with that one with more frequent updates, along with this one as a weekly (or more) column, but for now I will just concentrate on getting this running consistently; one of the reasons why I'm going for a blog with less frequent updates is that I have concerns about finding the time to devote to a blog on a consistent basis with my schedule varying week to week.

What you can [hopefully] expect from The Double Play is a high quality of writing. This is starting as a simple blog, but for me it is experience in what I hope to be my career path, as I work towards being a professional sports writer. Perhaps one day "The Double Play" will have a home in a newspaper, magazine, or a non-blog web site. Until then, enjoy!
